At least two major business groups in the Philippines on Wednesday said they will support the mandatory COVID-19 vaccination of employees to reopen the economy.
The private sector earlier suggested incentives for vaccinated individuals to the Inter-Agency Task Force Against Emerging Infectious Diseases.
These include allowing companies the right to employ only those who have been inoculated.
Based on Maki Pulido’s report on “24 Oras,” the Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PCCI) underscored people’s safety from the virus amid the pandemic.
“Sometimes we have to curtail yung personal right natin over others, mayroon din namang right ‘yung iba na baka mahawa ako sa’yo,” Alfredo Yao, PCCI director, said.
(Others have the right to be safe because they might get infected with the virus.)
Makati Business Club also backed the suggestion as long as there is an ample supply of vaccines.
“MBC supports the government’s drive to vaccinate the willing and to incentivize more Filipinos to be willing to be vaccinated… We hope these incentivize more people to get vaxxed, which helps slow the spread, accelerate safe reopening, and accelerate jobs and recovery,” Coco Alcuaz, executive director of MBC, said.
Eric Teng of Resto PH said they are not pushing for such a proposal but they will comply with it once the government approves it.
“We are not demanding but we will follow the guidelines,” said Teng.
In reaction to the private sector’s proposal, vaccine czar Carlito Galvez Jr. said it is not discrimination if a company refuses to hire a person who has yet to complete their vaccination. — Consuelo Marquez/BM, GMA News
