Converge CEO envisions Pampanga as Tech City in next three years

Converge ICT Solutions Inc. chief executive officer Dennis Anthony Uy on Wednesday unveiled plans to make his hometown of Pampanga a “Tech City” which would host digital innovations across Asia Pacific in the next three to four years.

During a fireside chat with the Nordic Chamber of Commerce of the Philippines, Uy said he has already been in talks with Trade Secretary Ramon Lopez and Finance Secretary Carlos Dominguez III regarding the matter.

“In the future, I am looking at building a tech city to give back to my hometown,” he said, noting that the Philippines is the perfect site for a digital hub given its location.

“The problem with the country is we lack an ecosystem, opportunity to give them, build them, and co locate the talents. Philippines, geographical location-wise, is the middle of Asia,” he added.

According to Uy, countries such as Indonesia, Malaysia, and Singapore currently have connections to the United States which pass by the Pacific Ocean, making the Philippines perfect to link such networks.

Uy also noted the Philippine talent, as he said a lot of Filipinos head overseas to areas such as Silicon Valley where more opportunities are available.

“The Philippines has so many talented persons, and if you go to Silicon Valley, you’ll see a lot of Filipinos there. I tell you, they are really good in terms of tech,” he added.

Converge ICT Solutions Inc. last month said its shares would be traded over-the-counter in American financial markets via unsponsored American Depositary Receipts (ADRs).

The company earlier said it targets around four million to five million subscribers by 2025, as it committed to have a national household coverage of 55% by then.

The company reported a 158% increase in its first-half net income to P3.252 billion, up from P1.259 billion a year ago, driven by the sustained demand for internet connectivity amid the prolonged community quarantines.

Shares in Converge closed Wednesday up P1.00 or 3.13% at P32.95 apiece from Tuesday’s finish of P31.95. — VBL, GMA News
