Online shopping platform Lazada on Wednesday told its customers that it will never solicit their personal data through instant messaging amid the influx of phishing text messages.
“Lazada would like to call the public’s attention to recent scams in the form of text/SMS messages,” the e-commerce platform said in a statement.
“These scams attempt to pass themselves off as official Lazada communication or impersonate Lazada personnel, enticing customers to participate in fake promotions or raffles or respond to job opportunities,” it said.
Recently, mobile subscribers reported receiving spam text messages from anonymous numbers recruiting them to suspicious job offers with high salaries.
“We would like to remind the public that Lazada will never send messages via text/SMS, instant messaging or social media apps requesting your personal or Lazada account details,” the company said.
“Please communicate or transact with Lazada, or any of our marketplace sellers, and access your account only via the Lazada app, website, and official channels,” it added.
The National Privacy Commission said it found in its investigation that a global organized syndicate is behind the influx of spam text messages.
The privacy body also eased concerns that the spam messages might be due to leaks from contact tracing forms, saying there is no direct evidence showing such correlation.
Lazada said it is working closely with telecommunications partners and local law enforcement agencies to “discuss, review, and clamp down on these fraudulent activities.”
