Transpacific to negotiate with Elon Musk s Starlink for satellite broadband rollout by 2022

Listed Transpacific Broadband Group International Inc. (TBGI) on Thursday said it is pursuing negotiations with American billionaire Elon Musk’s Starlink for the rollout of satellite connectivity in the country by next year.

In a disclosure to the Philippine Stock Exchange, TBGI said its board of directors gave the thumbs up for the company to engage discussions with Low-Orbit Satellite (LEOSAT) operators including Starlink for the rollout of LEOSAT technology in the Philippines.

“We are excited by the unlimited prospects of empowering government units, businesses and millions of Filipino households with advanced satellite internet services to meet their growing requirements for fast and reliable connectivity,” TBGI said.

“LEOSAT technology offers a unique combination of affordability, speed, flexibility, ease-of-setup and a 27-millisecond low-latency bandwidth to deliver a superior online experience in the next level internet- of-things,” it said.

Starlink is a division of American aerospace company SpaceX owned by Musk, which currently operates approximately 1,500 low-earth orbit satellites into space.

In line with its plan to negotiate with Starlink, TBGI entered into an agreement with international satellite operator ABG Global Ltd. “for the development and maintenance of multiple state-of-the-art earth stations in strategic areas nationwide specifically for LEOSAT connectivity.”

The company said it executed a Managed Service Agreement (MSA) with ABS Global “specifically for LEOSAT earth stations of Starlink.”

Specifically, the agreement between the two companies is for TBGI to provide colocation facilities and first level support for the development and maintenance of LEOSAT earth station in Clark, Pampanga for Starlink Holdings N.B.V.

The MSA is for a three-year period and extendable for another three years.

TBGI generates revenues mainly from Internet, Intranet, and local loop services subscriptions of schools, corporate private sector and government agencies.

The company sells data services to subscriber schools for Internet connectivity and virtual private network connectivity, and video uplink services to local and foreign TV channels.

TBGI’s franchise was renewed for another 25 years through a law signed by President Rodrigo Duterte on July 23. — VBL, GMA News
