The recent SWS survey said that more Filipinos expected a happy Christmas this year. But in the hustle and bustle of these holiday festivities, could you do something today to make things better for 2022?
We’ve listed down the best things to do before New Year’s Eve to attract positivity and start a good year!
1. Reconnect with family and friends
Connecting socially is more important than one might think to reduce stress. As a core human need, a simple catching up can benefit our mental health by having someone to talk to.
Evidently, the long isolation resulted in more reunions this year to make up for a lost time as the Department of Health (DOH) reminds the public to maintain safety protocols in parties to prevent the Omicron variant from ruining our 2022.
While most Filipino families and friends desperately wait for the most wonderful time of the year to socialize, you may also consider sending virtual love by video calling your loved ones, arranging a “zoomustahan” with your relatives, or conducting a party online with your officemates.
2. Support the local businesses
If face-to-face interactions cannot be avoided, opt for small gatherings, and choose outdoor restaurants or al fresco dining that survived the pandemic.
If you and your friends tasted good food, spread kindness by writing positive reviews on their social media pages. Reviews are very critical nowadays as people rely on them before making a reservation or going to the establishment. Help get the word out by sharing your fun dining experience and sending your appreciation for free.
3. Declutter
Make a list of the corners of your home to be decluttered, pick a space, and stick to it. Following the KonMari Method, get rid of the things that “don’t spark joy” and kick-start the new year with a fresh start.
Keep only the things that are functional for you and can speak to your heart.
4. Donate and let go
In the spirit of giving, look for ways to help those in need by donating what you can for the displaced families of Typhoon Odette in Surigao del Norte, Cebu, and other areas in Visayas and Mindanao.
After decluttering, we always find some items that we’re unsure if we should or can donate. Different organizations have various needs or lists of items that they don’t accept, so better to check with them first.
Also, dig deep and free yourself from emotional baggage by acknowledging your emotions and identifying what triggers or causes your pain or negativity. It’s also a good idea to think about what you’ve done well in the past year and evaluate the bad decisions or negative things that you don’t want to repeat in the coming year. Free yourself from harboring resentments and ring in 2022 with a new, long-term goal that you look forward to.
5. Get some “me” time
After the gift-giving season and letting go of some things (and resentments), it’s now time for you to give yourself a nice reward, no matter how small it is – be it food, a spa, or a haircut appointment to attract luck for the New Year’s Eve.
6. Evaluate your finances to plan for long-term goals
After splurging for a day or two, jot down your expenses and evaluate how do you want to spend or earn more money in the coming year. To create a monthly budget, determine how much you have by listing your monthly income and matching it with your needs, loans, and any other costs that need to be accounted for.
Planning for a trip? Upgrading your work-from-home set up with a heavy-duty laptop? Or buying a house away from Metro Manila? Establish your financial strategy, or simply, your version of the “ipon challenge” to get there and be ready to start by January.
7. Look for a job today
