Netizens dismayed by delivery service price surge during holiday season

Netizens expressed their dismay over the increase in delivery service surcharges during the holiday season, According to Chino Gaston’s “24 Oras” report on Tuesday.

Customers noticed, not only the surcharge increase imposed by the delivery service application Lalamove this December, but also a holiday fee on top of that.

“Doble doble yung naging charges nila tapos meron pang holiday fee pag-holiday,” said Customer Malou Hibaler .

(They doubled the prices of delivery fees and then there were also holiday fees.)

The report said that the delivery fee from Marikina to Makati usually costs more than P100. But during the holiday season, it costs more than P200.

The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) earlier called on Lalamove to explain the increase in delivery charges.

According to Lalamove, the delivery charges were implemented as an incentive for delivery riders to accept more orders being offered via the delivery service application.

“This is to ensure users’ delivery orders are fulfilled and to ensure partner drivers are compensated during the peak season. These surcharges are also a common strategy of other app-based delivery platforms,” Lalamove said.

The company added that this move also allowed them “to serve more, and allow more users to accomplish their deliveries.”

“In doing so, we are mindful of our obligation to be transparent to our users and therefore, we inform them of the additional fees via transparent pricing prior order placing so that they are aware of the total delivery fees before proceeding to order,” Lalamove said.

“Similarly, this also allows our partner driver to assess whether he wants to accept such an order at that fee. Drivers are able to take home the combined amount of base fare and surcharges net of commission,” it added.

For their part, delivery riders said they were taking advantage of the holidays to improve their income during the season, as well as cover recent fuel price hikes.

“Kumbaga sa susunod na ano wala naman kaming 13th month. At saka unang una nagtaas ang gas, susunod ang daming kakumpitensya. Kaya itong araw na lang, sana na itong buwan na ito, yun lang inaasahan namin na parang Christmas bonus namin,” delivery rider Apolonio Alfonso said.

(Next month, we don’t have a 13th-month pay, also the increases in fuel price, and there are a lot of competitors. Our income this month serves as our Christmas bonus.)
