Listed telecommunications firm Philippine Telegraph & Telephone Corp. (PT&T) has teamed up with Singapore-based next broadband satellite operator Kacific Broadband Satellites Ltd. for a very small aperture terminal (VSAT).
In an emailed statement, PT&T said the partnership will allow the firm to offer “high-speed” satellite internet at a “more economical” cost than other VSAT technologies, which it seeks to offer to unserved and underserved areas.
“As the new normal calls for people to follow social distancing and lockdown protocols, the need for reliable internet that is efficient and sustainable has never been timelier and more important, especially in the remote areas,” PT&T senior vice president for sales Ella Mae Ortega said.
The company did not disclose a timeline for the planned offering.
Powered by Kacific’s high-throughput Ka-band satellite Kacific 1, the satellite beams will be received by VSATs or small, roof-mounted dishes which transmit and receive data, voice, and video signals over a satellite communication network.
Kacific is banking on the demand for work-from-home arrangements, digital learning, and telehealth services which have grown amid the COVID-19 pandemic to boost the growth moving forward.
“[T]he partnership will further strengthen our position as a provider who can seamlessly connect rural enterprise, government, and residential customers,” Kacific chief commercial fficer Brandon Seir said.
“We will follow a common goal to deliver affordable internet connectivity nationwide and join the rally in driving digital transformation in the country,” he added.
Headquartered in Singapore, Kacific’s operations cover the Asia Pacific, with a market of over 100 million in 25 countries. It currently has 56 Ka-band spot beams, and is looking to launch a second satellite Kacific 2.
Meanwhile, PT&T has a reach of 22,800 kilometers in high-growth areas. It was earlier reported to have earmarked $250 million to expand its broadband footprint in Luzon.
Trading of the company’s shares has been suspended since 2004, as the company said it could no longer comply with reportorial requirements of the local bourse.—AOL, GMA News
