Workers confined at home due to COVID-19 covered by sickness benefit program, SSS clarifies

Members of the Social Security System (SSS) quarantined at home for at least four days due to COVID-19 are covered by the Sickness Benefit Program, the agency clarified Monday.

According to the SSS, qualified members can avail of the sickness benefit for a maximum of 120 days in a calendar year.

“Under the program, SSS provides daily sickness benefit allowance to qualified members who cannot work due to sickness or injury and confined either in a hospital or at home for at least four days,” the statement read.

The agency noted, however, that members will have to meet several requirements to qualify for the benefit, including a minimum of three contributions within the last 12 months, confined for at least four days, and have used up all their company sick leaves.

The agency said self-employed, voluntary, and overseas Filipino worker (OFW) members must report to the SSS directly by filling a sickness benefit application.

In the same statement, the SSS also reminded employers to pay the sickness benefit of their employees in advance, in line with the Social Security Act of 2018.

The latest statement was released in response to a call of Employers Confederation of the Philippines (ECOP) president Sergio Ortiz-Luis Jr. for the SS to cover workers confined at home.

The SSS is mandated to provide social justice and provide protection to members and their families against the hazards of disability, sickness, maternity, old age, death, and other contingencies resulting in loss of income or financial burden.

The Philippines on Monday, January 17, recorded 37,070 fresh cases of COVID-19, bringing the active caseload to 290,938. The total tally stands at 3.242 million, including 2.898 million recoveries.—AOL, GMA News
