URC targets net zero by 2050

Universal Robina Corp. (URC) aims to be net zero by 2050, as the company announced renewable supply agreements for its facilities on Thursday.

The listed food and beverage producer said it inked supply agreements with MPower and Vantage Energy Solutions and Management Inc., Bac-Man Geothermal Inc., and First Gen Renewables Inc. to supply 18 of its Luzon facilities and two Visayas facilities with geothermal, solar, and hydro energy.

“We aim for a low-carbon economy by optimizing the use of renewable energy amongst other tools to reduce the impact of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions,” URC chief sustainability officer David Lim said in a statement.

“[We target to] have all our plants utilize electricity from 100% renewable energy by 2050.”

URC earlier installed solar panels with a 2-megawatt capacity in its manufacturing facilities in Canlubang, Laguna, and San Fernando, Pampanga.

It aims to install more panels in its plants in Calamba, Misamis Oriental, Tarlac, Pampanga, and Cebu, along with the plans of its subsidiaries overseas.

URC operates its food business through three core business segments — branded consumer foods, agro-industrial products and commodity food products.

Its brands include Great Taste, Chippy, Cloud 9, Piattos, and C2.

Majority of the company’s branded consumer food business is in the Philippines, but it has presence in other territories such as the Cayman Islands, British Virgin Islands, China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Myanmar, Vietnam, New Zealand, and Australia.

URC shares were down by 30 centavos or 0.23% at P127.50 apiece as of 12:50 p.m. on Thursday. — VBL, GMA News
