Megawide Construction Corp. is not giving up yet on its proposal to rehabilitate the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA).
Megawide executive director for infrastructure development Manuel Louie Ferrer said that the NAIA rehabilitation project will be on the company’s “wish list” for the next administration, which will take over on June 30.
“NAIA [rehab] would be one because it’s already there. We are already into infrastructure development,” Ferrer told reporters at the Mactan–Cebu International Airport last week.
In December 2020, the government rejected Megawide’s proposal to rehabilitate the country’s premier gateway due to its supposed failure to meet financial capability requirements to undertake the project.
The company’s original proponent status (OPS) was revoked and the Department of Transportation decided to continue with the NAIA rehabilitation and reconstruction program.
Megawide appealed the government’s decision, but the Manila International Airport Authority board rejected it in January 2021.
Nonetheless, Ferrer said that “if the new administration is interested, why not? The proposal is ready. We never closed our doors.”
“It depends on the appetite of the [new] administration. We have a good proposal. We have a very good project,” he said.
Megawide and its partner earlier pegged the NAIA rehabilitation cost at P109 billion under a 25-year concession period, with the construction to be done in three phases — the improvement of airside congestion and terminals and the connection via bus rapid transit; the construction of a new terminal and additional taxi lanes; and the construction of an elevated railway. —VBL, GMA News
