The Department of Transportation (DOTr) on Monday said it will revisit a possible partnership with the private sector for the rehabilitation of the country’s main gateway.
Transportation Secretary Jaime Bautista said he understands the issues raised by proponents of proposals to rehabilitate the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA), coming from the private sector himself.
“In the aviation sector, we’re looking at the possibility of doing a concession with the private sector in improving Manila international airport,” he said in an interview on ANC.
“I had an initial discussion with some of the members. Me, coming from the private sector understanding their issues,” he added.
Prior to his appointment as Transportation Secretary, Bautista earlier served as president of flag carrier Philippine Airlines (PAL) under Lucio Tan.
Two major proposals were made to rehabilitate the airport, one from the NAIA Consortium which included Tan’s Asia’s Emerging Dragon, AC Infrastructure Holdings Corp., Alliance Global Group Inc., Filinvest Development Corp., and JG Summit Holdings Inc.
Pangilinan-led Metro Pacific Investments Corp. was also part of the consortium until it pulled out in March.
?Another proposal was submitted by a consortium of Megawide Construction Corp. and Bangalore-based GMR Infrastructure Ltd.
The proposals of the NAIA Consortium and the Megawide consortium were eventually rejected by the government.
“I told them that we will be very objective, we will be fair, and we will see to it that the private sector and government work together so that we can implement the modernization of Manila International Airport, considering that this is the gateway to the Philippines,” Bautista said.
He said the DOTr is also working with the Department of Tourism (DOT) to improve the NAIA, which will initially focus on the Terminal 2.
“DOT has very good branding vision of Terminal 2. They will install furnitures and works of art of Filipinos that when tourists arrive they will feel that they are really in the Philippines,” he said.—AOL, GMA News
