AC Energy switches on 150-MW diesel-powered plant in Pililla

Ayala Group’s AC Energy Corp. on Wednesday said it has begun the operations of its 150-megawatt (MW) diesel power plant in Pililla, Rizal.

In a disclosure to the Philippine Stock Exchange, AC Energy said the new power plant will “remediate the spate of power supply disruptions and augment the energy supply amidst the Malampaya shutdown by starting to supply essential peaking and reserve power.”

The Malampaya gas-to-power facility, which supplies 30% of Luzon’s power requirements, is under preventive maintenance from October 2 to 22.

The 150-MW diesel power plant in Pililla was built in partnership with Axia Power Holdings Philippines Corp., a subsidiary of Japan-based Marubeni Corporation.

AC Energy said the P1.9 billion diesel-fired power plant is the third plant switched on by the company for the year in the country, following the 120-MW solar plant in Alaminos in Laguna and the 63-MW solar plant Palauig in Zambales.

To ensure high availability for the plant, a UK-based company, Aggreko, installed 162 units of diesel generators, providing enough spare capacity, the company said.

Aggreko will also provide operations and maintenance services to the plant, it added.

“Thermal firming capacity is critical to our energy transition strategy towards a lower carbon portfolio,” said Jose Maria Zabaleta, AC Energy’s chief development officer.

Firming capacity refers to an energy supply that can be tapped when renewable sources become unavailable or when demand suddenly peaks, prompting the need for additional supply.

“To complement our renewables and to provide flexibility and stability to the grid, these firming assets will remain in our portfolio while we develop to scale up our energy storage facilities,” Zabaleta said.

The company said it is also gearing up for the start of operations of its 40 megawatt-per-hour battery storage plant in Alaminos Laguna, and another 4 MW in Bataan.

AC Energy is the listed energy company of the Ayala Group.

It has 2,600 MW of renewables capacity in the Philippines, Vietnam, Indonesia, India and Australia.
