House committee on social services chairperson and Quezon City Representative Alfred Vargas is urging the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) to strictly monitor the prices of noche buena items amid the holiday season.
In filing House Resolution 2348, Vargas also appealed to manufacturers and sellers to maintain the prices of basic goods to ease the burden of Filipinos who are affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.
The lawmaker stressed that the national government should ensure the “just regulation” of the prices of goods to alleviate the burden of Filipinos especially this holiday season and in the spirit of bayanihan.
“As we expect the increase in demand for noche buena goods and basic necessities due to the holiday season, it is imperative that prices of such commodities are regulated under the context the COVID-19 pandemic to help Filipino consumers while also protecting the rights and income of manufacturers and sellers,” Vargas said in his resolution.
Early this month, Trade Secretary Ramon Lopez said a number of manufacturers have committed to keep prices of noche buena unchanged during the holiday season.
Lopez mentioned that prices of grocery products have been minimal so far, with more than half of basic goods retaining their prices.
He said the DTI would be promoting manufacturers which will keep prices of noche buena items unchanged. — Anna Felicia Bajo/RSJ, GMA News
